Before the Aubette: A Historic Site Since the Middle Ages<\/h2>\n

As early as 1230<\/strong>, a Franciscan community settled on the square, then known as Barf\u00fcsserplatz (\u201cplace of the barefoot\u201d). The convent occupied a large part of the current site, surrounded by walls and accompanied by a vast cemetery. <\/p>\n

Over the centuries, the site evolved:<\/p>\n

  • 1525 :<\/strong> during the Peasants\u2019 War, refugees sought shelter in the convent<\/li>\n
  • 1529 to 1552 :<\/strong> abandonment and gradual demolition of religious buildings<\/li>\n
  • 1615 : <\/strong>installation of a mint and a cabinet of curiosities<\/li>\n
  • 1622 :<\/strong> monetary crisis and establishment of an exchange office<\/li>\n
  • 1675 :<\/strong> oath of allegiance by Swiss mercenaries to the city of Strasbourg<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    1764\u20131815: The Birth of the Aubette and Urban Transformation<\/h2>\n

    The story of the Aubette truly begins in the 18th century with a major urban planning project:<\/p>\n

    • 1764 :<\/strong> Strasbourg\u2019s Magistrate appeals to King Louis XV to modernize the city<\/li>\n
    • 1765 :<\/strong> approval of architect Jacques-Fran\u00e7ois Blondel\u2019s project<\/li>\n
    • 1767 :<\/strong> construction of the Aubette fa\u00e7ade, symbol of structured urban design<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      The building initially served military purposes, including guard rooms, accommodation, and administration.

        In the 19th century, Place Kl\u00e9ber became increasingly vibrant:<\/p>\n

        • 1830 :<\/strong> last grain market, followed by the emergence of the Christmas market<\/li>\n
